Nyerere National Park covers roughly the same ground as Switzerland, and until 2019 it carried a different name entirely. The Selous Game Reserve was gazetted in 1922 and named for Frederick Courteney Selous, a hunter-naturalist killed nearby in 1917.
In 2019 Tanzania carved its northern sector into Nyerere National Park, named for the country's first president. The reserve was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982.
